A Conservative Cat

This is the first of what I hope will be many pages devoted to my favorite subject: me.

You may be wondering how I'm able to produce this site. Obviously, the answer is that I'm relying on the assistance of a fully-trained human. Cats have been training humans for centuries, but the guy I've adopted acts like he's been bred to follow orders. Say what you will about computer geeks: they don't know how to dress, they have trouble communicating, they read too much science fiction, whatever. They make great pets.

Now I know some of you may find this hard to believe; however, I have dozens of witness who will tell you that when my pet is working on his laptop, he acts like he's listening to voices in his head. So, knock off the skepticism.

I consider myself a conservative because I think modern liberalism is too much about groups. Cats are by nature individualists. For example, I can't see a bunch of Persians banding together to lobby for stupider mice, or alley cats demanding easier access to food service dumpsters. Cats are also instinctive capitalists. Dogs hang around with humans because they think the humans belong to the same pack. Cats, on the other hand, owe their status to a strictly economic bargain: we kill the rats, you keep us out of the rain. Anyway, you get the idea.

I live in the Chicago suburbs with my pet Bruce, his wife, and their five children. The children all love me very much, which proves that they're highly intelligent. The oldest girl has her own web site. Her twin sister moderates a forum on Cellular Subsystems. Their experience and help has been invaluable in getting this site up and running.

DVD Rental Service	Netflix	This service is fantastic. Every time a DVD arrives at the house it's like Christmas, and I get a lot of work done while my pet is under the hypnotic spell of one of these DVDs.
Economist	Dr. Thomas Sowell	No matter what side of the fence you're on, Dr. Sowell's book A Conflict of Visions is essential to understanding modern politics and its 200-year-old roots.
Talk Radio Host	Laura Ingraham	Laura's show is smart, sassy, and colorful, which are all key feline attributes. The most reliable free stream of her show is KRLA 870.
Joke	How to Give a Pill to a Cat and a Dog	I think this is an excellent example of the difference between cats and dogs. In particular, we're a lot less gullible.
Lutheran Church	Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Arlington Heights, IL	My pet's wife is the Children's Ministry Coordinator at Our Saviour's. She also writes a daily EMAIL devotion about the joys and struggles of parenthood. Contact her if you are interested in being on the mailing list.
Martial Arts School	S. B. Kim Academy	My pet's children are into Tae Kwon Do. My pet does Tai Chi. One of my favorite things is sharpening my claws on my pet's pants while he's in the middle of some complicated Tai Chi form. The result is always hilarious.
Movie	Hocus Pocus	I can't help it. I'm a sucker for any movie with a talking cat in it.
Musical Group	Chicago Highlanders	The importance of this band is that the girl who feeds me every morning is one of the pipers.
Novel	The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents	This is a Discworld novel for children. My pet prefers Timothy Zahn, but Zahn's books do not have enough cats in them.
Radio Station	WLS-AM 890	This is Chicago's top talk radio station.
Restaurant Chain	Pizza Hut	Unlike most cats, I have a weakness for mozzarella cheese. My pet lets me eat the cheese off the Pizza Hut cheese-covered breadsticks if I give him my Special Look.
Sports Team	Chicago Cubs	Being a Cubs fan is totally different from being a sports fan. Other fans stress out when their team loses. We start to panic when our team wins. Thankfully, that doesn't happen often.
